Wonderfully staged and you will intelligently dialogued, it’ll have zero great difficulties inside lifestyle off its incredibly unappealing title.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Flick Bulletin told you “The film movements in the an instant pace, this new discussion are advanced and characterisations essentially productive. Cobb), and an effective scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sis (Nina Foch) spent some time working during the local casino and you will old a corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). While the plot employs a common development, the characterizations is fresh and also the activities adequate to overbalance. Dialogue try terse and you will relevant, steering clear of the psychological, phoney touch. Uncommon digital camera bases show up occasionally so you’re able to heighten notice and you may briefly stop the interest. Good teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, increasing because director-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, totally new author and you will representative producer, and additionally helps with making this a mellow creation.” [ 11 ]

Its primarily a point of viewing Mr. Powell experience their paces fashionably when you’re a big throw off stars and you will actresses promote him classic help. Evelyn Keyes takes on the nice little woman which brings out this new finest in him and you may Ellen Drew is the easy and you will slinky vixen whom becomes him towards jams. Thomas Gomez are fatty given that villain and you may Lee J. Cobb does a new in a position trip since an exhausted police inspector whom ultimately shuts the way it is. Significant amounts of consuming and you will puffing is done by all of the alarmed.” [ 12 ]
